A growing global concern in the post-pandemic era, factors from genetics to economic and societal environment contribute to the prevalence of mental health conditions and the obstacles individuals face in seeking and receiving treatment.

More than 1 billion people worldwide are affected by mental health conditions. 50% of the global population lacks adequate resources for care. Suicide is the leading cause of death among young people.

Economically, the cost of mental health conditions is projected to reach $6 trillion globally by 2030. This financial burden not only affects individuals and healthcare systems but also surpasses the combined costs of cancer, diabetes, and respiratory ailments.

Despite the growing recognition of mental health challenges, significant barriers persist in accessing timely and effective treatment. On average, there is an 11-year gap between the onset of a mental health condition and the initiation of treatment. Treatment outcomes pose a considerable challenge, with 30% of individuals failing to respond to interventions.

The intersection of physical and mental health is evident in the increased likelihood of individuals with diabetes developing depression. The link between these conditions highlights the importance of holistic healthcare that addresses both physical and psychological well-being.

Marine Mallinson detailed several mental health innovations that we will soon be able to count on: better prevention thanks to the precise evaluation of people at risk and earlier detection, treatments that can cut across multiple conditions such as psychedelics, personalized care such as psychosis detection by AI-powered model that reads facial micro-expression on videos, and improved efficiency within the health and payer systems.

The good news is increasing awareness and funding, both venture and philanthropic, to support research and a holistic approach to mental health. Melinda French Gates announced a $250 million initiative focused on improving the mental and physical health of women and girls globally. Patricia Sun shared the importance of integrating mental health practices at the leadership level and how they work with their partners, grantees and employees. She also shared how JLIN LLC and Jeremy Lin Foundation work to change the narrative around mental health and increase mental health services to the underserved, with a focus on hashtag#AAPI youth.
